COMMUNITY IN LOWER PUNA
SPACE Resilience Hub
Be part of the solution in Lower Puna.
Our neighbors are the heart of the SPACE Resilience Hub. Join the volunteer team to help prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies in Lower Puna.
Share your skills, time, or resources through our volunteer registration form. Registering does not commit you to volunteering; the Hub will contact you when help is needed. Operated by Hawaiʻi’s Volcano Circus, SPACE brings creativity and community care together.

A place to turn when the grid goes down
During past emergency activations, SPACE has provided drinking water, Wi-Fi, restrooms, and power, alongside food, ice, information, and neighbor-to-neighbor support. The Hub builds on the relationships formed through everyday classes and community gatherings.
Everyday connections. Shared resilience.
Know our neighbors
Classes, community gatherings, and creative projects build connections across generations. Those everyday relationships are part of SPACE’s resilience work.

Share knowledge
SPACE’s preparedness history includes resource fairs, outreach, community conversations, and training—ways for neighbors to learn together and identify local needs.
Show up together
During past emergencies, neighbors and volunteers have gathered at SPACE to share information, coordinate support, and care for one another.

A resource fair rooted in local food
At the March 25 Resource Fair, 17 local organizations participated and more than 300 people were fed with locally grown food. The account includes a reported 400 pounds harvested from SPACE gardens.
2026
Seven days of community care during Hurricane Lala
During Hurricane Lala in August, SPACE operated as a resource center for seven consecutive days, providing ice, water, electricity, restrooms, and Wi-Fi. The response account records approximately 600 served through door-to-door deliveries and at SPACE, in coordination with Pāhoa Resilience Hub / Kanaka Haʻaheo. It separately records approximately 200 people served at the facility. These figures may overlap and are not a combined total of unique people. After the activation, SPACE returned to its scheduled classes and programs.

Resilience grows through partnership
SPACE’s resilience story includes Vibrant Hawaiʻi and its KaiāULU Resilience Hub Network, the County of Hawaiʻi’s disaster recovery work, Pāhoa Resilience Hub / Kanaka Haʻaheo, and Mainstreet Pāhoa Association. These community connections support the Hub’s work in Lower Puna.
